On March 15, 2009 the drama "Big Love" which for the last two years has aired on HBO, will be showing a controversial episode involving temple ordinances of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons).
Like any large church organization, they often find themselves getting the attention of Hollywood, authors, magazines and the like. The Catholic Church was up in arms over the book and movie of "The Davinci Code" starring Tom Hanks. Archbishop Angelo Amato denounced the book as "stridently anti-Christian" as well as "full of calumnies, offenses and historical and theological errors regarding Jesus, the Gospels and the church." The movie was a box-office success and the Catholic Church and Christianity is still intact. Oh, and let's not forget Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ"............
Will airing the upcoming episode of "Big Love" have a negative impact on The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints? In my opinion, doubtful. They are rooted strongly with a foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a global membership of thirteen and a half million members. Let's not forget a growth rate of nearly 250,000 new members each year. Do I think their sacred ordinances should be displayed by the media? No. Whether it be Catholics, Latter Day Saints, Jews, Muslims, or any other faith, is it absolutely necessary to parade their ordinances for all the world to see?

I disagree with HBO's decision to air this episode because it does deal with something that is sacred, not secret, to the people of the L.D.S. faith.
I find objectionable any program that takes things out of context from any religious rite. I don't care if it is an L.D.S. rite, Catholic, Jewish, or any other religious rite. The sacred rites of any religion are just as important to them as mine are to me.
I do agree that the showing of this program will not likely hurt the L.D.S. faith. But I just don't subscribe to the thought that just because we can,we should.
